Wood Parquet Floors: Why a 70 Year Old Herringbone Still Beats Anything Laid Last Year

Pull up the carpet in a house built in the 1950s and there is a decent chance of finding oak herringbone underneath, dulled by decades of underlay foam, scratched, possibly stained black around the edges where a radiator leaked in 1987.

That floor is worth more than most of what you could buy to replace it. Not sentimentally. Structurally, and the reason comes down to a measurement.

Solid Parquet Blocks Are 18 to 22mm of Timber, Engineered Veneers Are 2 to 6mm

A solid parquet block is one piece of wood the whole way through, usually oak, typically 18mm to 22mm thick. Sand off two millimeters and you have used a tenth of it.

Engineered parquet is a different animal. A thin layer of real hardwood, the wear layer, glued onto cross-laminated plywood. That top layer runs anywhere from 2mm to 6mm depending on what you paid.

Everything else in this comparison follows from those two numbers.

A 2mm Wear Layer Cannot Be Sanded Even Once

Flooring specifiers grade engineered boards by wear layer, and the tiers are unforgiving:

  • 1 to 2mm. Budget product. It cannot be sanded at all. Trade language for this is a “replace, not refinish” floor.
  • 3 to 4mm. Decent residential grade. Allows one or two full sandings across its life.
  • 5 to 6mm and above. Premium, heavy commercial grade. Takes three to five sanding’s and behaves close to solid wood.

Most engineered parquet sold on price sits in that first band. A homeowner spends real money on a herringbone floor wood parquet, gets ten good years, then discovers that the scratches are permanent because there is nothing to sand into.

The 1950s floor has been sanded maybe three times already and still has enough left for three more.

Solid Parquet Lasts 75 to 100 Years, Engineered Lasts 25 to 50

Those are the figures the trade works with, and they line up with what you actually see in old buildings.

Victorian and Edwardian parquet floors are still in service, in pubs, in schools, in houses that have changed hands ten times. Refinished every ten or fifteen years, they simply carry on. The blocks that fail are usually the ones that got wet, not the ones that got walked on.

Engineered floors do not fail dramatically either. They just reach a point where the veneer is too thin to rescue and the whole floor comes up.

Laminate marketed as parquet sits lower again, roughly 10 to 25 years, and cannot be refinished under any circumstances because there is no wood on it. It is a photograph of wood under melamine resin.

Refinishing Every 10 to 15 Years is What Makes The Old Floor Renewable

The maintenance cycle on solid parquet is straightforward. Sand back to bare wood, repair any broken blocks, refinish. Most floors want this every 10 to 15 years, sooner in a busy hallway, later in a bedroom.

What that process does is reset the floor. Not improve its appearance slightly. Reset it, to something indistinguishable from new, because the surface you are looking at is freshly cut timber.

Nothing you can buy with a 2mm veneer offers that, at any price.

Old Floors Were Finished With Oil or Wax, And Modern Factory Finishes are Genuinely Tougher

Here is where the old floor loses on points, and it is worth being straight about it.

Period parquet was typically finished with wax or oil, which needs reapplying periodically and marks more readily. Contemporary factory-applied finishes are more wear resistant straight out of the box, and a modern engineered board arrives with a coating that an old floor never had.

So the trade is real. The old floor has more material and a softer finish. The new floor has less material and a harder skin on it.

Only one of those two problems can be fixed, and it is the finish.

Underfloor Heating And Damp Basements Are Where New Floors Beat Old

The case for engineered is not marketing, and anyone who tells you solid is always better is selling reclaimed blocks.

Engineered parquet is dimensionally stable because its plywood core is cross-laminated, with each layer running against the one below it. Those layers fight each other and the board barely moves.

Solid parquet moves. It expands and contracts with humidity, all year, every year. That gives you three situations where new genuinely wins:

  • Underfloor heating. Engineered handles it. Solid blocks can work but need careful humidity management and go wrong expensively when they do not.
  • Basements, kitchens and anywhere with moisture swings. Cross-lamination earns its keep.
  • Concrete subfloors. Solid parquet needs secret-nailing or full glue-down to a wooden subfloor. Engineered can float, which makes it fit situations where solid simply cannot.

There is also an installation reality. Solid blocks need to sit in the room acclimatizing for at least a week before fitting, sometimes longer in winter. Engineered wants 48 to 72 hours. Skip either and the floor gaps or buckles by spring.

Herringbone And Chevron are Different Patterns, And People Mix Them Up Constantly

Worth settling, since both words get used for both things.

Herringbone uses rectangular blocks laid at 90 degrees to each other with staggered ends, creating a broken zigzag with a slightly restless, textured look.

Chevron blocks are cut at an angle so the ends meet point to point, forming a continuous unbroken V. Sharper, more formal, more uniform.

Most 1930s to 1960s British and European parquet is herringbone. Chevron reads as more deliberately designed, which is partly why it has become the fashionable choice in new installations.

Restoring an Existing Floor Costs Less Than Laying a New One

Parquet materials run 20 to 50 percent more than standard plank flooring modern upgrade, and the labor is significantly higher because the pattern has to be set out precisely. A new herringbone floor is not a cheap purchase.

Sanding and refinishing an existing one costs a fraction of that, and the result is a floor with 70 years of patina and a full lifetime still ahead of it.

Before assuming yours is beyond saving, check three things:

  • Block thickness, by lifting one loose piece at the edge of the room. Anything with 10mm or more of wood above the tongue is worth restoring.
  • How many blocks are actually missing. Reclaimed matching blocks are widely available for common oak sizes.
  • Whether the damage is water damage. Blackened, cupped or lifting blocks around a former leak may need replacing rather than sanding, and that is a job for someone who does it weekly.

Avoid steam mops on any parquet, old or new. They drive moisture straight into the joints, which is the one thing these floors genuinely cannot survive.
