Lab-grown diamonds now sell for roughly 73 to 90% below comparable natural stones, depending on which index you consult, and they account for somewhere between 45 and 61% of US engagement rings depending on which survey you believe. Those two facts have done more to change how couples shop than any ethical argument. The environmental case, which most marketing leads with, is the weakest part of the pitch, and the FTC has issued formal warnings about the exact wording brands use. Resale values have fallen alongside retail prices, which matters less than it sounds but deserves saying out loud. What follows covers the pricing, the market data, the sustainability question, and what to check before buying.
Prices, And How Far They Have Fallen
Guides written a few years ago put lab-grown stones at 40 to 60% below natural. Those numbers were right when they were published and they are no longer close.
BriteCo’s retail data now puts the gap at 73%. Market analyses through 2026 put it wider, at 80 to 90% per carat for comparable stones. At the direct to consumer end, a one carat round that sold for around $3,400 in 2020 was available for roughly $400 by early this year.
Natural stones softened over the same window, though nothing like as sharply. One carat naturals fell about 26% between 2022 and 2025 while lab-grown equivalents dropped around 74%.
The decline has slowed. Analysts tracking premium certified stones describe the curve as having largely flattened, which means waiting another year to buy no longer earns you much.
The Reason Is Supply
Lab-grown diamonds can be produced in whatever quantity the equipment supports. They have no scarcity mechanism, so as CVD and HPHT processes became more efficient each year, supply expanded and pricing followed it downward. Natural stones hold part of their value precisely because they cannot be manufactured on demand.
Weaker demand contributed as well, since marriage rates have declined across much of the country while production climbed.
Market Share

Lab-grown represented 47.7% of engagement rings in BriteCo’s 2025 data. The Knot’s Real wedding weekend study puts it higher, at 61% of center stones. Relative market share for lab-grown jewelry grew roughly 710% over five years.
What that shift bought couples is size and quality at a given budget. At current averages the jump from one carat to three costs less than a single carat did in 2020, and around 85% of lab-grown stones now grade in the D to F color range.
The sales mix inside jewelry stores moved too, which is a quieter part of the story. Bridal purchases fell from 69.5% of sales in 2020 to 60.2% by 2025. Tennis bracelets went from 3.5% to 11.9% over the same period, a 240% gain in share, largely because cheap stones made a piece that needs many of them affordable for ordinary buyers.
The Stones Themselves
Chemically, physically and optically identical to mined diamonds. Same crystallized carbon, same 10 on the Mohs scale, same brilliance and fire. Telling them apart requires specialized gemological equipment rather than a loupe and an experienced eye.
The 4 Cs apply the same way to both. Controlled growth conditions tend to produce fewer inclusions and more consistency, which is why lab-grown inventory clusters in the higher clarity and color grades.
Sustainability Claims And What Regulators Said About Them
The ethical framing does most of the emotional work in lab-grown marketing, and it is the part with the least substantiation behind it.
In 2019 the FTC sent warning letters to eight jewelry companies. The letters admonish them not to use unqualified claims such as eco-friendly, eco-conscious or sustainable, on the grounds that it is highly unlikely any seller can substantiate all reasonable interpretations of those terms. The agency took no position on which product is actually greener. It simply told companies to stop making blanket claims.
Energy Is The Variable
HPHT and CVD both recreate temperatures above 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit and pressures reaching 70,000 atmospheres. That takes enormous electricity, so the footprint of any individual stone tracks the grid it was grown on more than anything else.
Sphera’s research found that in India, where coal dominates generation, the footprint runs 260 to 612 kg of CO2 per polished carat. Most HPHT production happens in China, which draws roughly 55% of its power from coal, and India sits nearer 75%. A stone grown on hydropower in Washington State and one grown on a coal grid in Gujarat are not comparable products environmentally, though they are sold with identical language.
Mining carries genuine environmental costs of its own around land disruption, water consumption and waste volume, and lab-grown production avoids those entirely. The honest position is that the answer depends on the facility rather than on the category, which is more or less what the FTC concluded.
If the environmental question is actually driving your purchase, ask which facility grew the stone and what powers it. Brands with something real to say can name the plant and the energy source. VRAI publishes this. Most retailers cannot produce facility level documentation, and a landing page using the word sustainable without naming anything is marketing rather than evidence.
Resale
Rarely mentioned in lab-grown marketing, and buyers should know it before rather than after.

Production costs keep falling, so what you pay this year will likely be cheaper next year, and secondhand values follow.
Two qualifications belong with those figures. Neither category is an investment, and anyone treating a diamond as one is going to be disappointed regardless of which they bought. And the percentages flatter natural stones in a misleading way, since someone who spent $1,300 rather than $11,000 is ahead in actual dollars even after a steeper percentage loss. For a ring intended to be kept, the depreciation is a number that never touches your life.
Certification And What To Check
Documentation from GIA, IGI or GCAL that explicitly identifies the stone as laboratory grown, with full specifications listed. Reputable lab-grown stones carry a laser inscription of the report number on the girdle.
Grading strictness varies between laboratories, so compare stones at matched certified grades rather than assuming that two stones described identically are equivalent.
Some things worth doing with the savings:
- Put more into the setting, since daily wear failures happen at prongs and shanks rather than in the stone.
- Ask about recycled gold or platinum, where sourcing questions are considerably more tractable than they are for the stone.
- Resist sizing up purely because the budget allows it. Proportion to the hand matters more than carat weight on a piece worn daily.
If you want the environmental claim to be real, get it in writing with a facility named. If you want the price advantage, it is already the largest it has ever been and the waiting game is mostly over.
